mushroom: (Doctor Who :: hello)
Drive-by recs that I've been slowly collecting since the archive opened! I've skipped the huge fandoms for now and just gone for the things that catch my interest, because I have an appallingly short attention span this year.

First, my amazing gifts!

Bioshock Infinite
The Accident (2276 words)
Relationships: Robert Lutece/Rosalind Lutece
Summary: How do you make sense of time when you no longer experience it as a linear path? How do you explain your experience of space when the laws of physics no longer apply to you? How can you blush without a heartbeat?
It's not easy, but Robert and Rosalind to do their best.
oh my god, I love this so much. It explores what happened to them immediately after the incident with their machine, and follows them as they explore their new state of existence, and Rosalind is a horrible tease and Robert blushes wonderfully easily and oh, it's just perfect in every way. Every time I reread it I find something new to be delighted by.
Why not sister? (1234 words)
Relationships: Robert Lutece/Rosalind Lutece
Summary: Elizabeth asks Rosalind an interesting question.
Rosalind continues to be a horrible tease and Elizabeth is more observant than perhaps she would like to be, and the voices in this are just perfect. And I do love it when other people try to figure out what exactly is going on between Rosalind and her 'brother'.

Peaky Blinders
Clean Dresses, Brass Tits, and the Importance of a Good Hatpin (3874 words)
Characters: Ada Shelby, Polly Gray, Finn Shelby
Summary: Three things that Polly Gray taught Ada Shelby during the war. Businesses don't run themselves, after all.
THE WOMEN OF THE SHELBY FAMILY, LET ME LOVE YOU. This is gloriously written backstory for Polly and Ada, where they continue to be terrifying and amazing and consummate survivors, and just, omg, it's perfect, if you watched any of Peaky Blinders or you just want to see women being awesome in 1900's Birmingham, GO READ IT. (though, also, do check the warnings before you read - there are the beginnings of brutality against women, but it's viciously shut down by the ladies themselves, which is wonderful all in itself)

and other fandoms! )

Yuletide! I received four (four!!) gifts, all for my prompt of Mary Poppins is a Time Lord, and they are all absolutely brilliant and I am the luckiest recipient ever, omg. I'm attempting to give proper recs beyond flailing about how brilliant and perfect and enjoyable and mine! these are, but that does apply to all of them :D

A Change in the Wind (2481 words)
Characters: Mary Poppins, Eleventh Doctor
Summary: Why does Mary Poppins have a bag that's bigger on the inside? Why, because she's a Time Lady, of course!
Rec'd because: Mary's voice is perfect, and there's discussions with Eleven, and it's fascinating seeing both how she operates as a Time Lady and how others view The Doctor. A perfect crossover!

A Family (1636 words)
Characters: Mary Poppins, Romana, Bert, Jane Banks, Michael Banks
Summary: After the Time War, Mary finds her own means of travelling.
Rec'd because: Mary is Romana! You don't need to know much Classic Who to understand (because I certainly don't, and this is still brilliant), and it covers all the magic things Mary does and explains them with Time Lord technology and technobabble, and it's glorious.

Hanging By a Moment (136 words)
Characters: Mary Poppins, Jack Harkness
Summary: Umbrellas are timeless.
Rec'd because: CAPTAIN JACK HARKNESS.

A Respectable Person Like Me (321 words)
Characters: Mary Poppins, Bert, The Doctor, River Song
Summary: In Which Mary Poppins is a time lord (of a sort).
Rec'd because: This is like an espresso shot of Time Lord awesomeness.

And then more recs! I've been dipping into the archive without any sort of system or plan and only a vague sense of avoiding the large fandoms and really long fic just so I can read as much as possible before reveals, so these are kind of all over the place.
23 more awesome stories! )

So awful at updating, omg.

Yuletide happened! I wrote Scott Pilgrim & the Unsubtle Seduction, which I'm kind of embarrassed by and slightly horrified by how many people have apparently read it, so! Here's some Scott Pilgrim fics you should actually read, because they are the greatest:

Strangely Patriotic - My gift! Omg, it's so delighful: Ramona, Kim and Knives road trip across Canada. Everyone is spot on and there's fights and hipsters and drinking! I want to cover it in scribbly hearts. I got so lucky! \o/

Listen to Bands That Don't Even Exist Yet - Stephen Stills is maybe gay? BEST SP FIC OF THE YEAR, because it's awesomely long, seventeen kinds of glorious, and I love it. It's coming-to-terms-with-sexuality fic in the best kind of way. ♥

I Don't Know What's Happening and I Can't Pretend - Scott can't get out of Thursday. It's essentially Groundhog day fic. SO GOOD.

a long way to love (that I must travel) - Ramona/Kim! With a small zombie apocalypse and bank robbing and girls being so, so awesome. ♥o♥

(I have so many fics bookmarked and I'm going through them so, so slowly, but I might have a proper rec list by, like, July, ish? urgh Yuletide you are ridiculously and delightfully massive.)

Also, [livejournal.com profile] yuletart! I drew Warriors (Ruffnut, Mulan, and Suki), which I'm mostly proud of, and was ridiculously fun to do. Girls being badass! ♥

Christmas happened! It was quiet and lovely, and I got a few cool things (How to Train Your Dragon DVD! Derren Brown's new book!) and A HOLIDAY TO TURKEY AHHHHH. I haven't left the UK in about seven years you have no idea how excited I am right now. Proper sun! On a yacht (it's a flotilla holiday, so proper sailing and travelling and yay! not just, you know, lying around on deck)! For two weeks! also dolphins!

This does mean that, by May, I'd really like to not hate my body quite so much. So! I'm eating more healthily and making a point of going out and walking whenever the chance comes up, and so far it's going okay!

I do Pilates every week already and I have plans for rock climbing, although I really need some new, healthy and tasty recipes. Any recs? :D

Job hunting is still going terribly, fandom is still shiny (I'm suddenly massively in to Kurt/Blaine? and I've started watching Legend of the Seeker, mainly for all the femslash I keep seeing. ♥o♥), and I've been keeping up with the flist although I'm still awful at commenting and most people (like me, actually) seem to have disappeared off to tumblr. How are you all?

Firstly, huge fic rec - [livejournal.com profile] luna_exchange. One of those rare times where I see an exchange I absolutely love but manage to restrain myself from signing up. Everything posted so far is utterly gorgeous, there's some truly wondrous gen (I especially recommend 'You Always Liked Apples Best') and the romance fics are just as lovely and just, omg, Luna. If you adore her as much as I do, you should definitely head over there whenever you're in the mood for fic ^^,

I finished that Tom/Dougie pic! It's shiny *g*
